State Operated Services has identified Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) as the approach to treatment it will employ in the 16-bed psychiatric hospitals. Leading national psychiatric experts say “illness management” and “recovery” are closely related, with illness management defined as a “broad set of strategies designed to help individuals with serious mental illness collaborate with professionals, reduce their susceptibility to the illness and cope effectively with their symptoms.” “Recovery” occurs when people identify what goals and dreams are important to them and develop a sense of identity that allows them to grow beyond their mental illness. IMR is an evidence-based practice being widely used throughout outpatient settings in the country and in some inpatient settings. Endorsed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it also is the framework the DHS Mental Health Division has identified as the preferred treatment approach in community settings.
